Chapter one · The camp
A working fight camp on the west coast of Phuket — four Krus, a small string of stadium fighters, and a handful of guests who show up before sunrise. Forty years of the same morning.
Chapter two
Our four Krus trained, fought, and coached at the oldest stadium camps in the country. The youngest is thirty-one. The oldest is sixty-four and still holds pads twice a day.
Kru Somchai opened Naga the year he retired from Lumpinee Stadium. He held the featherweight belt for eleven months and walked away because his father asked him to. He still holds pads at 5:30 every morning except Sundays.
He does not speak much English. He does not need to. The rest is understood through twenty-two minutes of pad rounds and the particular way he holds a towel between them.
Chapter three
Two sessions a day, six days a week. Arrive wrapped, arrive on time, and don't clap anyone's effort but your own.
Monday — Friday · Morning
Monday — Friday · Afternoon
Saturday — rest half-day
Sunday — closed
— A note on the wai kru
“You do not learn Muay Thai quickly. You learn it every day, the same way, until the day becomes the answer.”
